For Roslyn's Peter Toh, it's 'Love' at first sound
Peter Toh says it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. The singer-songwriter from Roslyn just happened to be sitting around with rapper Lil Mama, Miss "Lip Gloss" herself, and her father after working on building their studio. When they started talking about needing another song for her debut album, "VYP: Voice of the Young People" (Jive), Toh said he had exactly what they were looking for and pulled out his song "Truly in Love."
"They loved it and said, 'Let's record it right now,'" Toh says. "I'm so glad it worked out."
Not only did "Truly in Love" work out well enough to land on Lil Mama's debut, she kept Toh on the song, making him one of the album's collaborators along with Chris Brown and T-Pain.
"I'm really proud of it," Toh says. "It's a good dose of validation because it's so hard getting out there."
Now, Toh is focused on getting himself out there. He is planning to release his debut single, "Bone Structure," to iTunes next month and is working on material for his debut album rather than trying to go out and get a record company to support it.
Along with his manager, Adam Schleichkorn, Toh has created hiddentracktv.com to promote his music as well as other indie-minded videos. (The site is currently spotlighting another collaboration between Toh and Lil Mama called "Fire.")
Toh says his indie streak comes from immersing himself in Long Island's indie-rock scene, following in the footsteps of Glassjaw and The Movielife.
"I want to create a hybrid, something new, but not abstract," he says. "I want to be on rock radio. I want to do a new rock music, rock with a dash of something new."
